Portrait 2 day workshop - Spring 2024

The portrait workshop will allow students to create a portrait study process. You will work on drawing a portrait with graphite or charcoal. The subject will be based on skill level and preferences. Options include using a mirror for a self-portrait, a high-resolution photo, or directly from an iPad.
Exercises in the course will cover:
Medium handling skills, shape design, facial anatomy, gesture of the head, planes of the head, several academic approaches to depicting the head, Charles Bargue drawing plate studies, and a final project produced at the end of the course. Your goal is to incorporate the studies into your regular drawing practice with the guidance of the instructor.

basic FIGURE DRAWING

Students will work from a live figure model. Skill-building lessons will occur each week. Intermediate students who prefer less instruction, similar to a professional open-figure drawing environment, are also welcome. The course will cover repetitive short studies, sketches, block-ins, basic artistic anatomy, and master drawings for recommended study. Beginning students will be encouraged to focus on drawing fundamentals such as proportion, light, and shadow. Intermediate students will be encouraged to follow the change of model poses and produce at least one more prolonged pose drawing in each class.

There are many ways to draw, and individuality will be encouraged. Sight-size drawing will be the working method of the instructor, and this method will be the focal point in discussion, demonstration, and critique. Brief presentations related to academic figure-drawing approaches will inspire attendees to experiment and achieve an expression that agrees with their working nature.

Each class will include 20 minutes of warm-up gestures,  one 20-minute block-in, and two 45 45-minute poses during the first few weeks. The remaining weeks will focus on a 2-hour pose each night.
